Guide to Forklift License in Australia

Advanced Training Academy is offering learning resources and material for Australians seeking to pursue or advance in their chosen career paths. ATA recently launched its Forklift Licensing guide, covering all the prerequisites and details of the test.

Forklifts are mini-industrial trucks used to lift and carry heavy loads. Several roles exist that involve a forklift, such as a Forklift operator. The Bureau of Labour Statistics indicates that this profession will demonstrate a growth of 7% during 2020-2030, meaning that plenty of jobs will be open in this profession.

All Australian individuals interested in pursuing the position of a forklift operator must first obtain a license to drive a forklift. Advanced Training Academy, the leading Australian professional education portal, launched a comprehensive guide, explaining the process.

The WHS Act requires forklift operators to be licensed before they can operate a forklift, a lift truck, or any other lifting machine. In Australia, SafeWork NSW requires a License to Perform High Risk Work. ATA’s spokesperson underpinned the importance of forklift operators, stating:

“A licensed trainer plays an important role in preventing accidents like worker injuries and overturned forklifts. This license will show that you are well aware of how to properly operate the machine and reduce the risks related to it,” said ATA’s spokesperson.

According to ATA’s Forklift License instructions, only 18+ years old individuals fluent in the English language who have completed their HRW training with an RTO or Registered Training Organization in the suitable class and who have undergone an assessment by an accredited assessor from SafeWork NSW are eligible for a HRWL or High Risk Work License.

Various RTOs across Australia offer formal training for an HRW license. Prospective forklift operators in the making are required to participate in the relevant course and pass the assessment.

Afterward, the individual will receive several forms from the assessor, including the original orange and white copy of the licensee’s NSA, and the PDF form of Assessment by a SafeWork NSW assessor.

Individuals pursuing a forklift license will also be required to provide their current HRW license if they have one, payment, and a passport-sized photograph indicating the licensee’s date of birth and name printed on the back and verified by the assessor. Only test participants who have scored 100 points in the evidence of identity category are eligible to pass.

The license application has an expiry date of two months. It can be used by completing the online application for an HRW license, or by applying to a local WHS regulator.

An active Forklift License is only valid for five years. Once it expires, licensed forklift operators will be unable to perform high risk work and must renew it within 12 months.

Advanced Training Academy’s spokesperson continued, stating the duties of forklift license holders:

“Once you acquire your high risk work license, you will be required to do only the high risk work that you are licensed to do, comply with conditions and requirements imposed on your license, return your license to the WHS regulator when asked, inform the WHS regulator if you lose the license, and keep your license on you for adequate inspection,” ATA’s spokesperson concluded.

More information about the Forklift License process and requirements is available on Advanced Training Academy’s official website.
